Carom seeds or Ajwain (as known in India) also known as Caraway or Bishop’s Weed is an annual herb in the family Apiaceae (or Umbelliferae). Both the leaves and the seed like fruit (often mistakenly called seeds) of the plant are consumed by human.

Carom seeds resemble Cumin seeds in their appearance and are highly aromatic. However, the size of Carom seeds is smaller than Cumin seeds. Due to presence of thymol, raw seeds smell like thyme and are less subtle in taste as well as slightly bitter and pungent.

Carom seeds work as good preservatives and thus they are frequently used in pickles. Its seeds are much valued as a medicine due to its digestive and healing properties. Health experts say that these seeds are very helpful to cure kidney stones and also in treating pain caused by kidney disorders. Also, it is beneficial in curing respiratory disorder like asthma and bronchitis.
